Family Planning Conversations for Doulas

FRIDAY OCTOBER 2, 9 AM – 1 PM (IN PERSON)

Family planning is a deeply personal topic, and clients often have questions long before they speak with their healthcare provider—or after they leave an appointment wanting more clarity. As a doula, you’re in a unique position to provide a safe, supportive space where clients can explore their priorities, ask questions, and prepare for informed conversations with their healthcare team.

This evidence-based training will give you the knowledge, communication skills, and confidence to facilitate meaningful conversations about birth spacing, postpartum contraception, and future family planning. You’ll learn how to support informed decision-making, honor each client’s values and reproductive goals, and stay confidently within your doula scope of practice.

Objectives:

  • Build communication skills around eliciting client needs and desires about family planning
  • Be able to describe the risks of short birth spacing <18 months to a client
  • Be able to elicit postpartum contraception priorities from clients: side effects, privacy, and efficacy of the options
  • Learn about the postpartum contraception options available
  • Build confidence in adhering to the doula scope of practicewhile engaging in these discussions
